They are both asphalt
A 3-tab shingle is a single layer of asphalt-coated mat cut into three flat tabs. An architectural (also called dimensional or laminated) shingle bonds two or more layers together, which gives it its thickness, its shadow lines, and most of its strength.
Wind is the difference that matters here
GAF’s published wind warranties make the gap plain: up to 60 mph for Royal Sovereign 3-tab, up to 130 mph for Timberline HDZ when installed to GAF’s requirements. Maryland and Northern Virginia see summer thunderstorm gusts and the odd tropical remnant every year; a shingle rated for 60 mph is the one that ends up in the yard.
Thicker shingles also sit flatter and resist lifting at the tabs, which is where wind damage usually starts.
Warranty, looks and resale
Manufacturers put their strongest warranties behind their architectural lines, and buyers and appraisers read a dimensional roof as the current standard. A 3-tab roof on a house for sale reads as dated.
Several manufacturers have narrowed their 3-tab offering to a single line, which also makes matching colours for future work harder.
When 3-tab still makes sense
A shed, a detached garage, or a rental where the lowest first cost is the only goal. On a home you live in, the small step up to architectural is the better buy.
What we install
We install architectural shingles as standard, including GAF Timberline, and we give you a written, line-item price that names the exact shingle, underlayment and ventilation so you can compare quotes like for like.
