Roof Storm Damage and Insurance Claims, Explained Honestly

Roofing has an insurance problem, and it is not the carriers. It is the volume of contractors who tell homeowners whatever gets a signature — that the claim is guaranteed, that the deductible can disappear, that they will handle the insurance company for you. These pages set out how the process actually works, what a contractor legitimately does and does not do in it, and where the line is that you should not let anyone cross on your behalf.

Not legal advice, not a coverage determination. United Developers is a licensed roofing and general contractor. We are not a public adjuster, not an insurance agent, and not a law firm, and adjusting or negotiating a claim on a homeowner's behalf is a separately licensed activity that we do not perform. Nothing on this page decides whether your loss is covered. Coverage depends on your specific policy, its endorsements and exclusions, the cause of loss, and your carrier's own determination. Read your policy, talk to your carrier, and consult a licensed professional about your particular situation. What we do is document the physical condition of your roof accurately and scope the repair honestly.

Three rules that will save you more than any of these pages

  1. Nobody covers your deductible. An offer to absorb, waive or discount it is not a deal, it is a misrepresentation to your insurer on a policy with your name on it. Walk away.
  2. Photograph before you clean up. Dated photographs taken in the first days are the single most valuable thing you will ever have in a claim, and they cannot be recreated later.
  3. Nothing gets signed on a doorstep. Emergency stabilisation is urgent. Choosing a roofer is not. Verify the licence number, verify the insurance, take the paperwork inside.
