Is Gutter Replacement Covered by Insurance?

Gutters are the part of a storm claim most often left off the first scope, and the part homeowners most often assume is not covered when it is.

Short answer: Storm damage to gutters is generally covered on the same terms as the rest of the exterior — hail dents, wind detachment, impact from falling limbs — subject to your deductible and policy terms. What is not covered is gutters that have simply aged, sagged from debris weight, or pulled loose from rotted fascia. Gutters are frequently missing from a first scope, and that is a documentation problem rather than a coverage one.

What counts as storm damage to a gutter

Hail dents along the top face and in the trough. Gutters are aluminium and thin, so they bruise at lower impact energy than shingles — which is why an adjuster who cannot find hail on the roof will often check the gutters, the downspouts, the fascia metal and any soft metal vents.

Wind detachment, where a section has pulled away from the fascia or a hanger has torn out.

Impact from a falling limb or storm debris that has crushed or torn a run.

Damage that is a consequence of roof damage — for example a gutter that has to come off to replace the drip edge and roof edge underneath, which is a legitimate line item in a roof scope.

What is not covered

Age. Aluminium seamless gutter has a long life and it does eventually end, and a policy is not a replacement plan.

Sagging from years of debris weight, or separation at a seam that has been weeping for a long time.

Gutters pulling off because the fascia behind them has rotted. That is a maintenance chain — and it is worth knowing that fascia rot is usually caused by gutter overflow, so this one compounds.

Cosmetic-only damage where your policy carries a cosmetic damage exclusion. Read the declarations page; these are more common than people expect on exterior metal.

Why gutters fall off a first scope

An adjuster writing a roof after a large storm is working through a queue. The roof is what the claim is about; the gutters, drip edge, vents and detached accessory structures are small lines that are easy to miss, and they are the most common content of a supplement.

That is not something to argue about — it is something to document. A photo report that shows the hail marks on the gutter face next to the marks on the shingle makes the gutters part of the same event rather than a separate request.

This is exactly why we meet the adjuster on the roof. Not to negotiate: to make sure the list on the scope and the list on the house are the same list.

The part homeowners get wrong in the other direction

Replacing gutters without addressing why they failed. If the fascia is soft, new gutter hangs on rotten wood. If the downspouts discharge against the foundation, new gutter moves the same water to the same place.

Gutter guards are sold as a cure and are a maintenance reduction, not a maintenance elimination. On a house under trees they still need checking.

What we do

Free inspection across Maryland and Northern Virginia, usually within twenty four hours, with a photo report you keep either way. We document gutters, downspouts and fascia alongside the roof so they are part of the same evidence rather than an afterthought, and we give you a written line-item estimate.

You file and own the claim and your carrier decides coverage. We are a licensed roofing contractor, not a public adjuster, and we do not negotiate or adjust your claim. On an approved claim your deductible is typically your out-of-pocket cost.
