Can You Paint Aluminum Siding, or Should You Replace It?

Aluminum takes paint well. That is the thing most homeowners are never told, because painting is a smaller ticket than a re-side and a lot of contractors do not bother quoting it. If your panels are straight, unpunctured, and the only real problem is that the factory finish has faded and gone chalky, painting solves the actual problem you have.

Short answer: You can paint aluminum siding, and it is often the smarter choice. If the metal is sound and undented, a proper repaint buys ten to fifteen years for a fraction of replacement cost. Replace when panels are dented, punctured, or oxidized past the point where coating will bond.

When painting is the right call

A proper job is not a spray-over. It is: pressure wash to remove dirt and loose oxidation, a scrub to take off the chalk that will otherwise stop anything from bonding, spot priming or full priming with a primer formulated for oxidized metal, then two coats of a quality exterior acrylic. Done that way it holds for ten to fifteen years. Done as a quick coat over unwashed chalk, it peels in two, and then you have a worse-looking house and a wasted budget.

The four conditions where painting is a waste of money

The question nobody asks first, and should

Before either decision: what is behind the panels? On most DMV homes clad in the 1960s and 70s, the aluminum went on over original wood siding, frequently with no housewrap. If there is rot at the base of the walls or around the windows, painting the outside is cosmetic work over a structural problem. That is a ten-minute answer from an opened test section and it changes the whole calculation.
