Why the up-front comparison misleads people
A repaint buys you appearance and roughly ten to fifteen years, assuming the prep is done properly. It does not add insulation, it does not fix what is behind the panels, it does not come with a meaningful material warranty, and when it reaches end of life you are making this same decision again with fifteen more years of age on the substrate.
A re-side resets the wall assembly. Done correctly it includes housewrap where there probably was none, flashing at every penetration, and any rot addressed before it gets covered. Insulated vinyl adds real R-value to a wall that likely has none. And it comes with a manufacturer warranty measured in decades.
Where the honest answer usually lands
Paint if: the metal is sound, you have no dents or punctures, the trim and accessories are intact, you are staying five to ten years, or you need to bridge a few years before a larger project. Paint is also the right call on homes where the aluminum is confined to gables and trim over brick — re-siding that is a lot of mobilization for a small area.
Replace if: there is storm damage, panels are dented or punctured, the trim has failed, you want the insulation, you are selling and the exterior is what is holding the house back, or a test section shows problems behind the panels that have to be opened up anyway. Once you are opening the wall, the incremental cost of new siding over re-covering is much smaller than people expect.
The variable most people miss: insurance
If the damage came from hail or wind rather than age, the comparison may not be yours to fund. Siding damage from a covered peril is a claimable loss on most homeowners policies, and dents count even when the panel still sheds water. Where it gets interesting with aluminum is matching: when a damaged panel cannot be matched to the existing wall, many policies contemplate replacing a larger continuous section so the elevation is uniform. That argument has to be made with documentation, on site, to the adjuster.
