How the swap is done
The work is not difficult. The skill is in the diagnosis and the matching, not in the mechanics.
When a single-panel swap will not work
- The color gap is too visible. A new panel in the middle of a fifty-year-old wall reads as a patch. On a street-facing elevation that may be worse than the dent.
- The profile is genuinely unavailable. Uncommon and vertical patterns are harder to source than standard horizontal double 4 and double 5.
- The damage is not confined to one panel. Hail rarely hits one panel. Wind rarely lifts one panel. If we find damage across an elevation, swapping one is treating a symptom.
- The panels have become brittle. Very old aluminum with heavy oxidation can tear at the lock when worked. We check this before committing to a repair approach.
What this means for an insurance claim
This is where it gets worth understanding. If a covered storm damaged several panels and those panels cannot be matched to the existing wall, the repair does not put you back where you were — you end up with a visibly patched elevation. Most homeowners policies contemplate this. The claim question becomes whether a reasonable repair requires replacing a larger continuous section, and that is an argument made with photographs, profile documentation and a matching analysis, presented to the adjuster on site.
Contractors who do not understand this write the claim for four panels and leave you with a patchwork wall. We document it properly and meet the adjuster in person.
