Who permits the work
Takoma Park runs its own permitting for properties inside the city, and it enforces one of the strictest tree-protection ordinances in the region.
For a rooftop array that generally means two permits rather than one: a building permit for anything fastened to the roof
structure, and a separate electrical permit for everything downstream of it, pulled by the licensed electrician on the job. We
sequence both and pull the building permit under our licence — you file nothing yourself.
What Takoma Park homes are actually built like
Much of Takoma Park is pre-1940 Victorian, bungalow and foursquare housing, a good deal of it inside the historic district. That means plaster-and-lath rather than drywall, knob-and-tube wiring still live in places, and balloon framing that changes how a wall gets opened up. These are the houses where an honest scope and a cheap scope look least alike.
For solar that matters in two specific places: the age and condition of the roof covering, which decides whether the array
goes on now or after a replacement, and the capacity of the electrical service, which a licensed electrician confirms before
anything is designed.
