Copper is only a lifetime gutter if everything touching it is compatible and the seams are soldered. We install it that way, and we size the downspouts to the roof rather than to habit.

Soldered seams are the whole argument for copper
An aluminum gutter is sealed at its joints with a caulk that has a service life. A copper gutter is soldered — the joint is metallurgically continuous, so there is nothing in it to dry out, shrink or let go. That is what you are paying for. A copper gutter assembled with sealant at the joints is an expensive aluminum gutter, and it will fail at exactly the same places.
Ask any contractor quoting you copper whether the seams, end caps, outlets and miters are soldered. It is the one question that separates the real thing from the look of it.
Mixed metals are how copper fails early
Put copper in contact with aluminum or plain steel in a wet environment and the less noble metal corrodes — galvanic corrosion, and rainwater running through a gutter is exactly the environment for it. Hangers, screws, straps, outlets and downspout bands all have to be copper or stainless steel.
The same applies to what is above the gutter. Water shedding off an aluminum drip edge or a galvanized valley onto copper, or copper runoff onto an aluminum-clad wall, causes staining and corrosion that no amount of gutter quality prevents. We look at the whole path the water takes, not just the trough.
Half-round, K-style, and what your house is asking for
Half-round is the profile the older Chevy Chase and Bethesda houses were built with, usually with round downspouts, and it is what a period house looks right in. K-style holds more water for the same nominal size and suits later architecture. Neither is better; they are different houses.
Size is a calculation, not a preference. It comes from the roof area draining into the run, the pitch of that roof and the local rainfall intensity. Most of the overflow complaints we are called about are not clogs — they are a 5-inch run and one downspout doing the work of two. We measure the contributing roof area before quoting.
Copper also weathers: bright at install, then brown, then over many years the green patina. If you want it to stay bright, that is a maintained finish, and we will say so before you buy.
Historic districts and what gets reviewed
Parts of Chevy Chase, Kensington and Bethesda sit in designated historic districts. In Montgomery County, exterior changes on those properties go through the Historic Preservation Commission's Historic Area Work Permit before work begins, and gutter profile and material are the kind of detail that review looks at. Copper half-round is usually the easy answer there — but we check your address against the designations first, rather than after the order is placed.

Straight answers
How much more is copper than aluminum?
Several times the price of a standard aluminum system, and the labour is higher too because the joints are soldered rather than sealed. It is bought for a lifetime service life and for how it looks on a period house, not to save money.
Will copper stain my brick or siding?
Runoff from copper can stain masonry and corrode aluminum-clad surfaces below it. It is a solvable problem, but it has to be looked at on your house before the gutters go up — which is part of what we photograph at the inspection.
Can I keep copper looking bright?
Only with a maintained clear finish that has to be renewed. Left alone, copper goes brown within a year or two and takes many years to reach the green patina. Most people buy it for the patina.
Do you solder the seams?
Yes. Seams, miters, end caps and outlets are soldered. If a quote you are comparing does not say soldered, ask — a sealed copper gutter has the same failure points as aluminum at several times the price.
