A carpet job is the pad and the stretch as much as the carpet

The pad

Pad decides how the carpet feels and how long it keeps its shape. Carpet manufacturers specify the pad thickness and density their warranty requires. A pad that is too soft lets the backing flex until it wrinkles. We match the pad to the carpet you picked, not to the cheapest roll on the truck.

The stretch

Wall-to-wall carpet has to be pulled tight with a power stretcher and locked onto tack strip. A knee kicker alone does not get it tight enough in a full-size room, and that is what shows up a year later as ripples. Every room we carpet is power-stretched.

The seams

Carpet comes in rolls of a fixed width, so larger rooms have seams. Where they go is a choice. We draw the seam plan at the measure and keep seams out of doorways and main walking paths.

Stairs, basements and rooms that need something else

Stairs are installed one of two ways: waterfall, where the carpet runs over the nose of each step in one piece, or cap-and-band, where it is wrapped tight under the nose of each step. Cap-and-band takes longer and costs more. Each gives a different look, and we show you both.

Basements can take carpet if the slab stays dry. We test it first. If a basement has ever taken on water, we will tell you so and point you to luxury vinyl plank instead.

Bathrooms and kitchens are not carpet rooms. We will not sell you carpet there.

Carpet in Bethesda and Montgomery County houses

Many of Bethesda’s 1920s–1950s colonials and capes had carpet laid over their original oak floors decades ago. Before you replace the carpet, it is worth knowing what is under it. We pull back a corner at the measure. If there is solid hardwood worth saving, you may prefer to refinish it instead.

How a carpet job runs

  1. Measure. Every room and stair measured, seam plan drawn, basement slab tested if there is one.
  2. Written price. Carpet, pad, removal of the old carpet, stairs and transitions, each as its own line.
  3. Install day. Old carpet and pad out, tack strip checked and replaced where needed, new pad down, carpet power-stretched and trimmed.
  4. Walkthrough. Seams, transitions and stairs checked with you before we leave.

Straight answers

How long does carpet installation take?

Most bedroom and family-room jobs are done in a day. A staircase adds time. We give you the schedule at the measure.

Why is my old carpet rippling?

Usually because it was not power-stretched when it went in, or the pad is too soft for it. Sometimes it can be re-stretched rather than replaced, and we will tell you if yours can.

Can you carpet a basement?

If the slab passes a moisture test, yes. If the basement has had water, we recommend luxury vinyl plank instead.

Waterfall or cap-and-band on the stairs?

Waterfall is faster and costs less. Cap-and-band is wrapped tight under each step and gives a more tailored look. Both last when they are installed properly.

See where the seams go before you buy.
