Alexandria's housing runs from eighteenth-century Old Town brick through the 1920s-1950s frame and brick houses of Del Ray, Rosemont and Beverley Hills, and then again through the garden-apartment and townhouse blocks of the West End. Alexandria is an independent city — there is no county permit office above it. Alexandria has a designated historic district. If your home falls inside it, the material you choose matters more than usual. Review is run by the Alexandria Board of Architectural Review, not by the permit office.

The BAR's published administrative-approval policy is more permissive than most people expect and stricter in one specific place: a roof replacement that matches what is there can be approved by staff without a Board hearing, but original slate or tile must be replaced with the same material, style, color and shape, and three-tab shingles are not accepted unless there is historical evidence the building had them.
